Following the retirement of its Chairman, Thurrock Football Club closed its doors at the end of the 2017/18 Season and ceased to exist. The 17.4 acre site, including stadium, clubhouse, car park and community pitches were put up for sale. After an ordered marketing campaign, a deal was agreed in early 2019 with Group One Automotive, to develop and use the lower level community pitches for a new PDI Centre, benefitting from easy access to A13 and M25, whilst gifting the football ground, stadium and club house to the community, enabling this historic football venue to continue its journey and sporting heritage.

Despite a tortuous journey through the planning process, during which the goalposts were moved many times, the sale has finally concluded and Ship Lane Purfleet is the new home for Grays Athletic, the first time they have owned their own ground in their 134 year history, securing their future in the Isthmian League Division One North. It was very much a game of two halves, but football was the winner in the end!
